So This Is How I Went Abroad To Chop Breakfast – Judith

Judith has come to share her own breakfast story. Breakfast na national cake. E go touch everybody, e don touch Judith…

I’m going to start by saying this; Dear women, stop watching Korean movies. It is unhealthy for your heart.

Ahahn why? What happened?

I’m in severe pain as I’m telling you this. Forget that I’m laughing ooo. It is funny now but it was not funny then. Omo this Oyinbo boy use my eye see pepper. It is not only Nigerians that can be wicked ooo. Jesus.

Hahaha. It can’t be that bad, c’mon. Oya give us the gist.

So I travelled abroad in 2018 August, I travelled to the US and I stayed in Tennessee.

Hmmmm, are you from Tennessee cause you are the only ten I see?

Mtchew, better stop playing. I’m being serious with my heartbreak story.

Eweeey. I’m sorry, go on.

I met this guy, Richard. He was cool and everything and I loved his vibe from the very first day. I met him at a bar and he paid for my drinks, you know, the normal gentleman courtesy thing.

So the thing is, when I travelled, it was my first time leaving Nigeria and I used to have so many fantasies of how I was going to get married to a white man and have beautiful half-cast babies. I had this perception about white men and how they loved. That they were the cutest and that they loved their women wholeheartedly. I thought they never cheat like it was something only Nigerian men did. But Omo, I was wrong.

When Richard approached me and we talked for a while, the first thing that came to my head was this Korean movie, ‘Boys Over Flowers’. If you have watched the movie, you’ll know that the main boy was from an extremely rich home and the main girl character was from the opposite. They fell in love and lived happily ever after against all odds. I thought this was the beginning of my series. From the way he spoke, I could tell he was from an extremely rich home. The way he looked, the drinks he got. Like this man had money oozing out from him. He was so attractive. Richard is attractive, I can’t take that away from him, but God will punish him sha.

After we had enough or I had enough because he was ready to drink everything in that place, I decided to go. He offered to drop me and I saw he was driving a BMW. Hmmm, ok.

Of course, he took my number so we started to see each other often. He would come to my school and take me out for lunch and sometimes dinner. We started as friends. He was patient and so kind. Like he came with everything love comes with. Is it generosity? He was generous. Omo, I had no clue.

Clue of? Why are you keeping us in suspense like this?

That’s the point. You’ll feel the suspense I felt. We were friends for two months before he asked me out. When we started dating things changed even though he had not had sex with me. If not I would have noticed and said he just used me, but no, there was nothing like that at all. As I said, he was patient. He stopped taking me out for lunch, we stopped going on dates and all. He just mostly called and claimed to be out of the state. I told my girlfriends about it and we joined our heads together to think. The only reasonable thing that could make sense was that he was married but I started to think, before we started dating, we went out on dates and dinners so if he was married, why was he comfortable with taking me out and what made it change when we started dating? If he could hide me then, why couldn’t he still hide me now? I started to think and think till I felt the problem was coming from me.

“He said he travelled. Why are you thinking about it so much? He didn’t give you a reason to doubt him. You didn’t catch him cheating. He has not had sex with you and he has never pressured you for sex.” This was how I kept assuring myself every day that all was well till one Tuesday evening.

Ghenghen!

Rest. Why are you so excited to hear what made me so sad?

Not like I’m excited. I’m just anticipating. I want to know the end because I have two things in my head. Either he’s a swindler and you were scammed or he was actually married.

Me? Scammed? Do I have money? No, I wasn’t scammed with money but yes I was scammed with love and no, he’s not married.

Ok, spill it.

One Tuesday evening, I went to a bar with my friends and I saw someone I thought I had seen with Richard before. A guy.

Wait is Richard gay?

No! Chill. I walked up to the guy and I started a conversation and I told him who I was. Surprisingly, he said he knew me already. I was happy, at least Richard told his friends about me. There was something about this guy, something off. Like he didn’t want to speak to me. He gave me this racist vibes but I wasn’t ready to leave cause I wanted to ask him about Richard. When I asked about Richard he said he was not in the state. I was revealed so I started to tell him that I felt weird about how Richard changed all of a sudden. I told him that normally when guys do things like that, we ladies always feel it was because they had sex with us but in my case, he never touched me. That was how his racist friend gave the most shocking answer. He said I thought too highly of myself to think Richard could sleep with me. He said I was only a bet that made him win a lot of money. It was then I remembered where I had seen his face.

He was with Richard at the club. Oh wow! I was a bet. When I got back to school, I called him and I was straightforward about it. It was so brief. I asked him about what his friend told me and he kept mute. After saying ‘Hello’ several times without a response, he hung up on me.

Wow. All I can say is wow.

That is it o my sister

So why did you drag K drama in the beginning?

They led me astray. Why on earth would I want to marry a white boy before? Loving in ‘the abroad’ is not as easy as it seems. Some factors like racism and generally how they see Africans. You know you can be black and still have a good accent. See me na, I sound like a correct Nigerian so it was worse. Anyway, I think I’m over it.

You think?

I’m over it.
