Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes were the world’s favourite couples for a while till they crashed. What could have gone wrong?

Everyone talked about this relationship and expected a wedding and a family filled with babies. Nobody saw what was coming, maybe only the people in the relationship. The thing about these two was that they were best of friends before being lovers so people believed that it was going to be easier and they would fit perfectly. 

Who is Camila Cabello?

Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao is a Cuban-born American singer, songwriter and actress. She rose to fame as one of the members of the girl group, Fifth Harmony. She has been romantically linked to Austin Mahone, Louis Tomlinson, Jacob Whitesides, Shawn Mendes and others in the past. 

Who is Shawn Mendes?

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Shawn Mendes was romantically linked to Hailey Baldwin who is now married to Justin Bieber and he was also linked to Chloe Grace Moretz.

Camila’s Dating History

Camila is well known for dating Shawn Mendes. Their relationship lasted for more than two years but before then, she has been romantically linked with some other stars.

Camila and Austin Mahone

The two dated in 2014 but the reason for their breakup was not stated. They wish each other well and still root for each other. After Camila left her girl band, ‘Fifth Harmony’ she released a solo song, Havana and Mahone said he was so proud of her. 

Camila and Louis Tomlinson

The two were spotted outside a nightclub in 2015. Fans shipped them together and even created a hashtag that trended on Twitter, #congratulationsLouisAndCamila. There is still no news confirming if they were ever in a relationship or if they were just friends.

Camila and Jacob Whitesides

Whitesides one time said he was crushing on Camila Cabello. He posted a picture with himself and Camila and as usual, fans started to speculate. During an Instagram Live, he revealed that they were just friends and it was only a crush, nothing more.

Shawn Mendes has also had previous relationships or had been rumoured to have, asides from the Latin singer, Camila.

After the two got flirty on Twitter with comments and posts, fans started to pair them up. They both never spoke about it so it was never confirmed or denied.

In 2017, they were spotted kissing at the EMAs after-party. In 2018, they also came for the MET GALA together. Shawn while speaking to Rolling Stone after their supposed break up said they were just friends and he didn’t want to put a title. He said Hailey was a beautiful person and had a beautiful heart. He added that he was an idiot for you know… he never completed it but his words after were, but you can’t control your heart. With those words we can see that he wanted to say ‘he was an idiot for not loving her but we believe he didn’t say that because he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.

The two met in 2014 at Austin Mahone’s tour and Shawn mentioned that nobody talked to him during the tour apart from Camila. He discussed this with V Magazine and Camila who was also at the interview.

Camila added that during the tour, Shawn was always by himself, playing music and learning the guitar till she decided to approach him.

In November 2015, the two made a song together called ‘I know what you did last summer.’ and it sparked dating rumours. The two stated that they were just backstage and they were playing around till they eventually wrote a song. In April 2018, Shawn said Camila was his favourite person in the world. 

“I don’t think you’ll ever meet somebody who can feel emotion like her, in all aspects,” he continued. “She can feel hurt like no other, but she can feel love like no other,” he said. 

Camila replied saying that she loved the singer so much. In December 2018, the two stirred up collaboration rumours when Camila posted Canadian fury + Latin Sass and we were right because in June the following year, they released their song ‘Senorita’ which was a hit in so many countries. The lyrics and the videos give us signs that they were dating.

Fans became so happy for them. After a while, the PDA started. They were caught kissing by TMZ in San Francisco. In August 2019, Camila took to Instagram to celebrate Shawn on his birthday.

The both of them continued the PDA even though they never said they were dating. They said on different shows that they were in relationships and they wanted to keep it private. 

In November 2019, they went to NBA games together.

In 2019, Camila was 22 and she said on Ellen DeGeneres show that she had been single for 20 years straight before being in a relationship with Mendes. They finally started dropping hints to tell us they were dating but oh well, we figured already. On the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Camila talked about how it was hard for her to start calling Shawn ‘baby’ since he was her friend.

In December 2020 while speaking with Sirius XM Shawn said that their friendship turned into a romantic relationship through a text. He said he had been bugging Camila about how he felt about her and then she finally replied saying she liked him too in the most basic way. Everything was going smoothly for the couple. They kept posting pictures and making appearances and we kept on anticipating ‘i said yes’ pictures. We were not prepared for what was about to hit us. 

The End of A Beautiful Relationship

November 2021, the couple announced their break up through a joint statement on E!

“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship, but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”

What Went Wrong? 

In an interview, Shawn stated that their break up was a result of shifting priorities. Cabello also agreed to the reason while speaking to Zane Lowe. She said her priorities had fluctuated and her focus had changed throughout her life. She stated that her focus was on how she could be a well-rounded person, and how she could be happy and have healthy relationships. She stated that her focus wasn’t even on her career and that she was doing a lot of therapy. 

They both became celebrities at a young age and according to her, they were still learning to be healthy adults which meant focusing on their careers. Fans feared that they’d stop being friends just like most exes do, but we are glad their friendship only grew stronger. 

Lessons To Take

In a relationship, people are bound to change, you have to be ready to evolve with the person as long as it’s a positive way. Not just evolve with the person but to love that person. You say you are ready to grow with your partner? If you are indeed ready, then you should expect changes because growth comes with change. Like I stated, positive changes.
