What God Has To Say About Divorce

Divorce is a topic that has been debated for centuries, and opinions on the matter vary greatly. Some view divorce as an acceptable option in certain circumstances, while others believe it to be completely unacceptable. But what does God have to say about divorce?

In the Bible, God’s views on divorce are clear. While divorce is permitted in certain circumstances, it is not God’s ideal or desire for marriages to end in divorce.

The book of Malachi 2:16 says, “For the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I hate divorce and marital separation and him who covers his garment [his wife] with violence. Therefore keep a watch upon your spirit [that it may be controlled by My Spirit], that you deal not treacherously and faithlessly [with your marriage mate].”

This verse reveals that God hates divorce and those who cover their spouse with violence. It also encourages spouses to remain faithful to their marriage vows.

Jesus also spoke on the topic of divorce in the New Testament.

In Matthew 19:3-9, the Pharisees approached Jesus and asked Him if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason. Jesus responded by saying, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Jesus’ words emphasize the importance of the marriage covenant and the sanctity of the union. He goes on to say that divorce should only be allowed in cases of sexual immorality, such as adultery.

The apostle Paul also weighed in on the topic of divorce in his letters to the Corinthians. In 1 Corinthians 7:10-16, he addresses the issue of believers married to unbelievers.

He advises that if the unbelieving spouse is willing to remain married, the believer should not seek divorce. However, if the unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, the believer is not bound to keep the marriage together.

It is important to note that while God hates divorce, He also extends grace and mercy to those who have gone through it.

He understands the pain and heartache that come with the end of a marriage and offers comfort and healing to those who seek it. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse offers hope to those who are struggling with the aftermath of divorce.

While divorce is not God’s desire for marriages, there are circumstances in which it may be allowed. Sexual immorality, abandonment by an unbelieving spouse, and violence are all situations that may warrant the end of a marriage.

However, it is important to remember that divorce should not be taken lightly and that marriage should be held in the highest regard. God’s grace is available to those who have gone through divorce, and He offers healing and restoration to all who seek it.
