Legend’s Reflection 4: Identity
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” – James 1:22-24 NIV
Your identity is in God’s word – written and spoken (divine revelation).
Looking into the mirror and forgetting immediately after what we look like is similar to having an identity (from the word) but living, talking, relating, and behaving like people without a clan.
We are of the clan of Judah, the blood of Jesus runs through our veins. We have been set aside to give him pleasure in our relationship with him and with people.
To bring this to context, you cannot win the identity battle in a world with many distractions without deliberately prompting yourself constantly.
The world, its trials and challenges, the survival, deceit, envy, your needs, your lack, and more are the realities that often make you forget your identity just after looking in the mirror. However, deep down, you know this is not who you are and what you should be yet you accept and succumb to life’s whims and caprices.
The prompting we need is a question we can ask daily, “who does the word say that I am?”
Every other situation and circumstance is irrelevant because they are not TRUE. The truth is in the IDENTITY.
The problem with believing a lie is that other big lies come to support it.
Now that we know the truth, we must regularly…
1. Speak our identity
2. Be an example/model our identity (even when circumstances say different)
3. Look in the mirror (the word) constantly for directions
You can experience some success in life but will never experience true greatness until you know, accept and live your true IDENTITY.
