Tobi Amusan is all over the news today for breaking a record not just in Nigeria but in the world.
After winning the women’s 100m hurdles in Oregon on the 24th of July, 2022 , Tobi Amusan automatically became the first Nigerian Athlete to win a World Athletics Championship, breaking a world record at the same time.
She completely erased the world record after a stunning and stellar semi-final game where she clocked in faster than others in just 12.12 seconds.
Tobi Amusan passed the previous best mark originally held by Keni Harrison which was 12.20 seconds. She passed this mark with 8 solid points.
After her amazing win, the grateful and absolutely elated Nigerian Athlete gushed
“Honestly, I believe in my abilities but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,”
“The goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me but I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis.”
“Before the final, I just tried to stay calm and to do my best. I took a deep breath knowing that I have some goal to accomplish and it worked pretty good. I knew it was very fast but not this fast.”
Tobi Amusan started off fiercely and gracefully made her way into the first hurdle building in momentum, having a clear lead and then finally pulling away completely from runner ups Anderson and Camacho-Quinn to hit the cross lines and establish her win.
