Who is The Weeknd?

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, professional known as The Weeknd, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer. He was born on the 16th of February, 1990 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has gotten numerous awards including 4 Grammy Awards, 20 Billboards Music Awards, 17 Juno Awards, 2 MTV Video Music Awards and so many others including nominations. 

He was released in Time magazine as one of the world’s most influential people in 2020. He is also an advocate for racial equality and food security which made him a World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador in 2021.

With all the achievements and awards, Abel can’t seem to get his love life straight. He has had a lot of back and forth with his relationship and he is definitely not a pro in this aspect. His major exes have had the same reasons to break up with the Grammy award winner and it only has to be true. They have complained about distance and time. He has quite a complicated dating history and he has only been involved with a few women.

The Weeknd And Bella Hadid

We really cannot talk about The Weeknd without mentioning the gorgeous supermodel, Bella. She was his long term on and off girlfriend. She was his longest. The Weeknd and Bella had their first half in 2015-2016  before coming back for the second half in 2017-2019.

The two met back in 2015 and were spotted at Coachella in April that same year. According to a close source, they had crossed paths since but it was till they got to Coachella they started talking. They were seen hanging out together and it sparked dating rumours among fans. The source also said that Bella loved his music and they had so many things in common so it was quite easy for them to vibe. 

In October 2015, Abel came out to say that at first, he wanted to talk to Bella for just business. He wanted her to model for his album ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’. She initially disagreed and he asked if they could meet up and they did and things just went on from there. Abel and Bella were also spotted in Soho in the same month and they were not alone. Bella’s elder sister, Gigi and Mum, Yolanda were present meaning they were aware of their relationship and they have given consent. 

Bella’s mum also posted a picture of The Weeknd and her daughter on Bella’s birthday.

The duo were going strong and everybody gushed over them on social media, the supermodel and the cute singer who sings sad seductive songs. 

In December 2015, Bella featured in her boyfriend’s music video, In The Night.

During the holidays, E! reported that the couples were on a break in their relationship and this was because they got busy and it affected their relationship. A close source said they were still together and it was not a break but they were not just in the same location. 

In February 2016, the couple shot down their breakup rumours by making a debut on the Grammy’s red carpet together.  Bella even took it to her Instagram to celebrate her boyfriend who was nominated for several awards. She captioned it, ‘

“This is YOUR day baby! I’m so proud of you ❤️I feel so lucky to be by your side 👑”

Not only was he nominated but he won his two first Grammy awards!  Bella couldn’t contain her Joy. She said she was so happy cause he was happy and she knew how long he had worked for it.

In March 2016, Abel came to support his girlfriend as he was spotted at the Daily Front Row’s Fashion Los Angeles Awards. May 2016, they made their MET Gala debut as a couple. Both of them wore Givenchy. 

In October 2016, they went on a trip on a jet to Tokyo.

The Weeknd was also by her side as she celebrated her 20th birthday on the 11th of October. In November, People ran a report and discovered that the couple had broken up.

A source said that the Weeknd was so busy and he wanted to focus on other things like pushing out his album and his music.

On November 25th The Weeknd’s album came out and he was to perform on Victoria Secret runway, the same stage his ex Bella was going to walk. Bella while speaking to E! news said that it won’t be awkward because Abel is her best friend and that she’s excited to walk when he performs.  After his performance, Bella hailed him on her Instagram page saying he killed the performance as always. 

We can see that the two broke up amicably and people believed the couple would still get back together.

In January 2017, hopes of getting back were shattered when The Weeknd was seen Kissing the singer-songwriter, Selena Gomez in Santa Monica. Hadid unfollowed Gomez and took a picture of herself raising her middle finger. People believed it was a response to the new relationship. A source explained that Bella and Abel had a peaceful breakup but the Model was pissed because of how fast he moved on. Bella reached out to Abel a couple of times and told him that Selena was just using him but he didn’t listen to her, instead, he said she was just Jealous.

The Weeknd And Selena Gomez. 

The Weeknd and Selena Gomez started dating in January 2017 and 10 months after, they called it a quit.

They accompanied each other for several events like Coachella

New York Fashion Week, MET Gala and others. A source told Page Six that, 

“Everyone wants love, but his focus is the business. He’s building a legacy. He’s young and successful with money and can have any girl he wants. Their relationship kind of came out of nowhere.”

Here he was talking about The Weeknd, he was way too ambitious and focused on his music career that he won’t even permit love to get in his way.  

Not long after their breaking up, Gomez was seen with her ex, Justin Bieber. It is believed that The Weeknd wrote some songs about Selena and they were not good lyrics.  He said he was ready to go under the knife for her and at that time, Selena was undergoing a kidney transplant. He also said the unnamed woman in his song treated him like a pit stop and she wasted his life.

Although people said it was because of Justin Bieber, a source confirmed that the two had already broken up way before Justin came back. 

The Weeknd And Bella Hadid Again

November 2017, two weeks after Abel and Selena’s break up, Abel was seen leaving Bella’s NYC apartment. Abel reached out to Bella to amend their friendship at least and she agreed.

In April 2018, US Weekly reported that the couple were officially back together and were seen Kissing at Coachella. In October, the couples were seen together on Bella’s 22nd and Bella used her Instagram page as a medium to thank her family and her baby, Abel.

The two also celebrated Abel’s  29th birthday together. They were seen wearing matching camo outfits and Bella captioned, 1 minute till my favourite day of the year…..@theweeknd

This was in February 2019.

In August 2019, they broke up.  A source said they were both in different places both physically and mentally, Bella is prepping for her fashion week and The Weeknd on his music and his acting debut. In October they were rumoured that they were back together after The Weeknd made an appearance on  Bella’s 23rd birthday but the two claimed it was just friendship. 

In November 2019, Bella posted a picture on Instagram and Selena replied with ‘stunning’. Instead of replying to the comment, Bella deleted the whole picture.

The two eventually settled things amicably.

Although we do not know whether Bella and The Weeknd will get back together again, we can say that some of his songs are credited to the supermodel. 

Lessons To Learn

If you are not ready for a relationship, don’t go into one. You need to be able to create time for people you claim to really love. If you can’t do that then you don’t deserve to be in a relationship. As you can read here, The Weeknd tried and it didn’t work out well. Someone ended up getting hurt. 

I won’t say long distances are bad because people thrive well in long-distance relationships as long as there is good communication. Learn to communicate with that person or else they’ll learn to do without you.
