Nse Ikpe Etim Once Ran Away From Home To Escape Early Marriage
Nse Ikpe Etim also revealed in an interview that she once left home at an early mage because the concept of marriage scared her and she did not want to get married.
In her own words,
“After school I didn’t think I was going to be an actor. It wasn’t the first thing on my mind. I did it in a bid to run away from getting married early.
“I ran away from home with a backpack. It was the second time ever I had go on a bus.
“So I got on a bus and instead of going to Satellite Town, where we lived at the time, I went the other way towards Badagry, because I wanted to run away.
Then, in some village along that road, I saw cameras. So I jumped down and that was the first time I met Kate Henshaw.
“That was 1996, when I graduated. That’s how I met Julius Agwu, Francis Agwu — all of them were on that set.
The movie was called ‘Scars of Womanhood’ I think. But for me, it was not so much about the work. It was that I wasn’t home.
“I got down from the bus and I told them I read Theatre Arts. They said oh okay, she (Kate Henshaw) needs a friend. I met her (Kate) and we formed a bond that has lasted till tomorrow.
Meanwhile, my mother was looking for me. I got back home after about two weeks and my mother started washing me: ‘You are going to disgrace me!’ I said ‘Ah, I don’t want to marry’.
“I didn’t tell her about the movie set. I just told her that it looks like I’m going to be an actress and she said ‘Over my dead body’.”
NseIkpe Etim Had Her Womb Removed
In a tell it all interview at an event named “Conversations with Nse” she revealed a very personal and sad story. She opened up on her inability to conceive a child and that it was because she had her womb removed after she was diagnosed with Adenomyosis.
This is a condition where the inner lining of uterus breaks through the muscle wall of the uterus.
In her own words, she said
“I was told I couldn’t have kids and so, I had to have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) to have a life again and to stop going through what I was going through.
I’m literally telling women and men, it really doesn’t matter if you can’t bear children. What really matters is what you would do for the world, for the universe”
She also spoke about her battle with depression after finding out that she had to remove her womb.
She also recalls her husband being there for her every single step of the way and it did make her feel better.
She said her depression stemmed more from the fact that the society expected most females to bear children. It was like an age old question asked to women in their thirties and fourties’ with no children.
However she got through it and we are thankful that as tough as it was it did not break her.
The society needs to do better and give females the chance to do what what they want with their bodies without unnecessary expectations.
She is happy In her love life and currently all seems to be working out smoothly for her.
