Omotola On Getting Married At 18 And Why Married Women Should Be Financially Independent

Renowned Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has spoken out about the importance of financial independence for women before getting married.

She believes that any woman who does not have a source of income should not even think about getting married because such a person would only be setting herself up for imprisonment in the marriage.

During an interview with BBC Yoruba, the accomplished actress was asked if she would allow any of her children to get married at the age of 18, as she did.

She replied that she was at the age of consent when she got married and, most importantly, she was mature enough when she met her husband.

She revealed that currently, she only has one child who is 18 years old, and even if he decides to get married, she would not allow it because he does not have his own money yet.

She emphasized the importance of wisdom and common sense in everything one does, adding that people cannot say that because she got married at 18, others should follow suit.

Omotola further explained that when she got married at a young age, she was already financially independent. She had been working since she was 15 years old and had become a millionaire by the age of 18. This is something that many people do not know.

She stressed the need for women not to marry men when they are not financially stable, otherwise they would be heading for slavery or prison.

Omotola revealed that she lost her father at an early age, and so had to become responsible for her younger siblings. She took on the role of their mother, and this made her very mature and financially prepared for marriage.

The mother of four also touched on the issue of impersonation. She revealed that she trademarked the name ‘Omotola’ due to numerous cases of impersonators using her name for fraudulent activities.

She disclosed that she constantly received reports from lawyers that people had been falling victims to fraudsters using her name. To protect her brand, she had to take the expensive step of trademarking her name.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s message to women is to ensure that they are financially independent before getting married. She believes that marrying without a source of livelihood would lead to imprisonment in the marriage. She also advised that people should not make decisions based on what others are doing, but should apply wisdom and common sense in everything they do.
