She recounted, “I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce.

So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’” Chris was taken aback and profusely apologized for the misunderstanding.

On a related note, Jada also shared her perspective on the infamous Oscars incident where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who was hosting the show, in response to a joke he made about Jada.

Following the incident, Jada revealed that she hasn’t spoken to Chris since. However, she recounted a moment when Chris tried to make amends.

“Chris came down to the end of the stage and tried to apologize to me. He said, ‘I didn’t mean you any harm.’ I said, ‘I can’t talk about this now, Chris. This is some old s—.’ I thought this was [about] the Oscars in 2016 and … their stuff that they had before I even came into the picture in the late ‘80s. I’ve got to leave that to Will and Chris to talk about, but they got their stuff for sure,” she explained.

In an interesting historical context, Jada recalled her involvement in the #OscarsSoWhite movement in 2016 when she advocated for a boycott of the Oscars due to the lack of diversity in nominations.

Coincidentally, Chris Rock was hosting the awards show that year and had made jokes about Jada. Reflecting on this, Jada expressed that she didn’t fully comprehend the immense pressure Chris might have been under at the time.

She revealed that she probably should have conveyed to him that her stance regarding the Oscars was distinct from her personal feelings toward him and that she wished him the best.

In a later development, Jada mentioned that Chris called her, and they both extended apologies to each other, perhaps mending some of the tension stemming from their past interactions.
